A Snowy Grad Photo Session at University of Guelph

I love when clients want to do photo sessions in snowy weather. Being in Guelph ON, Canada the snow’s here almost half the year so it’s important to embrace it. Being a former UofG Gryphon, I know first hand that most of my university memories were made on campus in the snow.

I remember the blizzards that created last minute snow days, slippery walks down Alumni Walk to Rozanski Hall, and warming up with a hot chocolate listening to live music in the Bullring. Winter is a central theme in a U of G student’s life on campus.

Holly + Corina knew this was how they wanted to capture their memories of the last 4 years at the University of Guelph. Booking a snowy graduation photo session in early February. We lucked out and not only got beautiful snow all over campus, but also some flurries to add some depth to the images with big falling snowflakes.

What most photography clients don’t realize is that snowy images allow their skin tones and clothing to pop more vibrantly in photographs, providing some visual contrast to every photo. Winter shoots usually give the most flattering lighting as well since most days are cloudy + overcast. This is ideal portrait lighting for it’s soft lighting and gentle shadow contrast.

Grad shoots also have the advantage of the wardrobe, a gown to keep you warm while posing for photos (but I also recommend bringing a winter jacket + gloves for staying warm in between photos!).

Here’s a few of my favourite shots from Holly + Corina’s grad photo session.
